Running through Disneyland: Day 1 and 2

Last weekend my hubby and I attempted AND succeeded in running a 5K and a 10K back to back through Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. It was so much fun! Although I had been at the park when I was 2, I considered this a first time visit for both of us. We arrived on a cold and rainy Thursday. But that didn’t stop us from having fun! First thing we did was to visit the expo and pick up our race bibs, shirts, and a few trinkets we had to have to remind us of our time here. Then we were off to Disneyland! When we left the hotel and began walking through Downtown Disney, we came across the monorail for Disneyland. We were able to board and arrive in Tomorrowland. Which meant we missed seeing the grand entrance and the castle. But that’s okay. We were able to see it later on in our visit. We spent most of the day taking in the sights and amazed by the lack of crowds! I suppose the rain really did put a damper for others. After a full day of traveling (we woke up at 3 am!) and sightseeing, we were in bed by 7 that evening! I could barely keep my eyes open. We knew we had to be in bed at a reasonable hour since we were informed that we had to be in our corrals by 4 the following morning for our first race!

map_disneyland5k2017Friday morning arrived and we sleepily made our way in the chill air to our corrals. We were a bit late so we missed the early morning festivities, but that was alright. As soon as they let our corrals go, we were off! The course took us through part of Disney’s California Adventure before taking us through Disneyland. I was like a kid in a candy store! Especially when we went around a bend and landed in Carsland! It was still dark out but as soon as you hit that area, the whole landscape is lit up and you feel like you really are out west! Not that California isn’t out west. But you know what I mean! Grand Canyon out west! I almost stopped in my tracks! I desperately wanted to take a picture, but I kept running. With my mouth wide open I’m sure! Every photo you see of me in that race, you can tell that I just could not stop smiling!

After the race, we headed back to our hotel room to shower and head back out. Day 2 meant we switched it up a little and visited Disney’s California Adventure. The park opened at 9 for the general public. But since we got up so early for the race and were staying on Disney property, we were able to get to the park at 8 am! We freakin opened a park after running 3.1 miles!!!! What a thrill! First thing we did was to ride Screamin’ California. What a rush. It was like riding on an old fashioned wooden coaster! That went upside down! After that we headed over to Toy Story Midway Mania where I’m proud to say I finally beat my husband at the game! After that he needed some down time from the rides, so I rode the Mickey’s Fun Wheel (a ferris wheel of FUN!), Silly Symphony Swings, and the Golden Zephyr all by myself. The swings reminded me so much of the swings we used to have in town when the Opryland Theme Park was alive. Talk about reliving your youth! Afterwards we were off to a quick breakfast at a coffee stand before going to ride Soarin’ Over California. Mind you, this was still before the parks were open to the public. The day was still a little cold, but the clouds had cleared and the sun came out to play.

After all was said and done, we went back to our hotel room by 8. While I spent some quiet time getting my things ready for the next big race, my husband went back to the Expo with the intention of getting some more steps in. He ran into Jeff Galloway while he was there! If you’re not aware, I’ve been following Jeff’s race plans ever since we started training for our Disney races. He’s a genius when it comes to running in intervals! When my husband sent me the pics, I was so jealous! But I was already in my pj’s about to go to sleep, and I physically could not move another step. I knew that if I wanted to do well in the 10K the next morning, that I really needed my rest. I won’t let that happen at the next race though! I will for sure make it to the expo and get his photograph AND autograph just like my husband did!
